Understanding what Mental Health is
Mental health is more than just the absence of mental illness—it’s the foundation of our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It shapes how we think, feel, and behave in everyday life, influences how we handle stress, make decisions, and interact with others.
Good mental health allows us to cope with life’s challenges, build healthy relationships, work productively, and enjoy life fully. Conversely, poor mental health can affect every aspect of daily living, making it harder to focus, manage emotions, or maintain meaningful connections.
Taking care of your mental health is an ongoing process that involves self-awareness, healthy coping strategies, and, when needed, professional support. Prioritizing your mental well-being empowers you to live with resilience, confidence, and balance—and to thrive even in the face of life’s difficulties.
“The True definition of Mental Illness is when the majority of your time is spent in the Past or Future, but rarely living in the realism of NOW.”
– Shannon L. Alder, n.d.
“Slow, deep breathing is important… it’s like an anchor in the midst of an emotional storm: the anchor won’t get rid of the storm, but it will hold you steady until it passes.”
– Russ Harris, 2008
“I believe the best way to manage our thoughts is to first educate ourselves. We need to fully understand how Mental illness can feel to someone before we thoughtfully talk about it”
– Kati Morton, 2018
“You don’t have to be positive all the time. It’s perfectly okay to feel sad, angry, annoyed, frustrated, scared or anxious.Having feelings doesn’t make you a negative person, it makes you human”
– Lori Doeschene

Understanding mental health is important because it helps us recognise how our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours affect our overall wellbeing. When people have a better understanding of mental health, they are more able to notice when something is not right and seek support when needed. It also helps reduce stigma and encourages open conversations about struggles such as stress, anxiety, or depression. By learning about mental health, individuals can develop healthier coping strategies, support others more effectively, and take positive steps to maintain balance and wellbeing in their daily lives.
